One of the
best place to stay in Port Royal (and a five-minute
drive from the airport) is the elegant and atmospheric
Morgan's Harbor Hotel (ph 876/967-8030 or 8040, fax
967-8073; US$130-160), all dark wood and seafaring
charm with a pool and an open-air bar. Otherwise, ask in the
town square about one of the private homes in the small
housing development behind Church Street.
Morgan's Harbor Hotel
has a good and reasonably priced restaurant, Sir Henry’s,
which affords marvelous views of the city and cooks up
excellent seafood and "international" dishes. Several
cheaper eateries near the ferry pier serve Port
Royal's best fish; the most popular is Gloria's
Rendezvous at 5 Queen St, where you can enjoy a tasty
plate of fish and bammy and watch the pelicans and frigate
birds fishing just offshore.

Otherwise, there's Buccaneer's Roost around the
corner, a patty store on the same block, and local women
selling fried fish in the main square. At weekends, speakers
are stacked up in the square for an outdoor party,
playing dancehall on a Friday and oldies on Saturday;
Gloria's occasionally has Sunday oldies parties. |
