John D. Rockefeller amassed a fortune in the oil industry in the nineteventh century. He used part of his great wealth to build Kykuit (KYE-kit), a four-story stone mansion overlooking the Hudson river in North Tarrytown, New York. Surrounded by gardens, fountains, and terraces, Kykuit was home to four generations of Rockefellers, including U.S. ice President and New York governor Nelson Rockefeller.
Today, parts of this great estate are open to the public.

In spring and summer, isitors are permitted to tour the main floor of the mansion, which is filled with antiques, Chinese porcelain, and works of art. They can also view an extensie art collection housed in below ground galleries. Antique carriages and classic automobiles from the family's extensie collection are on display in the coach barn.

Large areas of the landscaped grounds are also open. isitors walk through a series of formal terraced gardens filled with flowering trees and shrubs, roses, and ornamental fountains.
Outstanding examples of twentieth-century sculpture collected by Nelson Rockefeller are also displayed on the grounds. Among them are superb works by Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, and Alexander Calder.
