As it penetrates the Spring Mountains, Hwy-157 itself remains
relatively level; the hills rise on either side. When it begins to climb, the
ascent is gradual and not all that dramatic. Only as you feel your ears popping
do you realize you've left the valley behind.
As the closest part of the
mountains to Las Vegas,
Kyle Canyon
is the main day-trip destination. With each passing year, a few more
buildings appear on its slopes, and it's starting to become a
residential community.
Still, though there are a couple of hotels with year-round restaurants,
there's nowhere up here to buy gas or basic groceries so stock up
accordingly beforehand.
