Hampstead's newest attraction is 2 Willow Road, a modernist,
red-brick terraced house built in the 1930s by the Hungarian-born
architect Ernö Goldfinger. When Goldfinger moved in, this was a
state-of-the-art pad, and as he changed little in the house in the
following sixty years, what you see is a 1930s avant-garde dwelling
preserved in aspic, a house at once both modern and old-fashioned.
An
added bonus is that the rooms are packed with works of art by the likes
of Max Ernst, Duchamp, Henry Moore and Man Ray. There are a limited
number of tickets for the guided tours, so it's worth booking
ahead. Incidentally, James Bond's adversary is indeed named after Ernö -
Ian Fleming lied close by and had a deep personal dislike of both
Goldfinger and his modernist abode.
Tours April-Oct Thurs-Sat noon-5pm every 45min; phone 020/7435 6166;
