Chiwick to Windsor - Osterley House
The Osterley Park maintains the impression of being in the
middle of the countryside

Robert Adam redesigned another colossal Elizabethan mansion three miles northwest of Syon at Osterley Park, which maintains the impression of being in the middle of the countryside, despite the presence of the M4 to the north of the house. The park itself is well worth exploring, and there's a great café in the Tudor stables, but anyone with a passing interest in Adam's work should pay a visit to Osterley House itself. If you arrive by public transport, you get a £1 reduction off the price of your ticket.

From the outside, Osterley bears some similarity to Syon, the big difference being Adam's grand entrance portico, with its tall, Ionic colonnade. From here, you enter a characteristically cool Entrance Hall, followed by the so-called State Rooms of the south wing. Highlights include the Drawing Room, with Reynolds portraits on the damask walls and a coffered ceiling centered on a giant marigold, and the Etruscan Dressing Room, in which every surface is covered in delicate painted trelliswork, sphinxes and urns, a style that Adam (and Wedgwood) dubbed "Etruscan", though it is in fact derived from Greek vases found at Pompeii

Park: daily 9am-7.30pm or dusk; free. House: April-Oct Wed-Sun 1-4.30pm; £4.20. Tube: Osterley
