Eton College
The original fifteenth-century schoolroom , gnarled with centuries
of graffiti, survives , but the real highlight is the College Chapel

Crossing the bridge at the end of Thames Avenue in Windsor town brings you to Eton , a one-street village lined with bookshops and antique dealers, but famous all over the world for Eton College , a ten-minute walk from the river. When the school was founded in 1440, its aim was to give free education to seventy poor scholars and choristers; how times have changed.

The original fifteenth-century schoolroom , gnarled with centuries of graffiti, survives , but the real highlight is the College Chapel , completed in 1482, a wonderful example of English Perpendicular architecture. The self-congratulatory Museum of Eton Life , where you're deposited at the end of the tour, is well worth missing unless you have a fascination with flogging, fagging and bragging about the school's facilities and alumni.

College and chapel: Easter, July & Aug daily 10.30am-4.30pm; after Easter to June & Sept daily 2-4.30pm; £2.70; guided tours daily 2.15pm & 3.15pm; £4; www.etoncollege.com.
