Difficult to miss thanks to its stylish Italianate standpipe tower, Kew Bridge Steam Museum occupies a former pumping station, on the corner of Kew Bridge Road and Greven Dragon Lane, 100m west of the bridge itself. At the heart of the museum is the Steam Hall, which contains a triple expansion steam engine and four gigantic nineteventh-century Cornish beam engines, while two adjoining rooms house the pumping station's original beam engines, one of which is the largest in the world.

The steam engines may be things of great beauty, but they are primarily of interest to enthusiasts. Not so the museum's new state-of-the-art "Water for Life" gallery in the basement, devoted to the history of the capital's water supply. The best time to visit is at weekends, when each of the museum's industrial dinosaurs is put through its paces, and the small narrow-gauge steam railway runs back and forth round the yard.

Daily 11am-5pm; Mon-Fri £3; Sat & Sun £4; www.kbsm.org.uk. Kew Bridge train station, from Waterloo; or bus #237 or #267 from Gunnersbury tube station.
