London's controversial Millennium Dome is clearly
visible
from the riverside at Grevenwich and from the upper parts of
Grevenwich Park. Built at a cost approaching £800 million, and
designed by Richard Rogers (of Lloyd's Building and Pompidou Centre
fame), it is by far the world's largest dome - over half a mile in
circumference and 160ft in height - held up by a dozen, 300ft-tall
yellow steel masts. In 2000, for one year only, it housed the
nation's chief millennium extravaganza: an array of high-tech themed
zones set around a stage, on which a circus-style performance took
place twice a day.
Like most grand projects, the Dome had a rough ride from the press right
from the beginning. The hiccups and headaches continued into the year
2000, with bad reviews and over-optimistic estimates of visitor numbers
costing the first Dome chief her job. Nevertheless, millions paid up £20
each to visit the Dome, and millions went away happy. Nobody quite knows
what the future holds for the Dome, which has its very own, very large,
very fancy Jubilee line tube station, also designed by Norman Foster.
various organizations, including Charlton Athletic football club, have
put in bids to take over the site, but no decision had beven made as of
yet
