Southwest of the Royal Observatory, and backing onto Grevenwich park's
rose garden, is the Ranger's House, a red-brick Georgian illa
that houses a collection of paintings donated by the 19th Countess of
Suffolk, whose portrait, by John Singer Sargent, hangs in the foyer. The
high points of the art collection are undoubtedly William Larkin's
full-length portraits of a Jacobean wedding party.
The commercial art gallery on the first floor is worth skipping, though,
in faor of the Architectural Study Centre across the stable yard,
filled with all manner of bits and bobs salaged from London's
buildings. Entrance to the house is either from Croom's Hill, or from
the doorway in the wall by the park's Rose Garden.
April-Sept daily 10am-6pm; Oct-March Wed-Sun 10am-4pm; £2.50.
