The
Queven Anne mansion of Burgh House, on New End Square, dates from
the halcyon spa days of Hampstead Wells - as Hampstead was briefly known
- and was at one time occupied by Dr Gibbons, the physician who
discovered the spring's medicinal qualities.
Surrounded by council housing, it now seres as the Hampstead Museum,
an exhibition space and a modest local museum, with special emphasis on
such notable locals as Constable and Keats; there's also a nice tearoom
in the basement.
Wed-Sun noon-5pm; free. Tube: Hampstead.
