Regent Street finally stops just north of Oxford Street at Langham
Place, site of All Souls, Nash's simple and ingenious
little Bath-stone church, built in the 1820s. The church's unusual
circular Ionic portico and conical spire, which caused outrage in its
day, were designed to proide a isual full stop to Regent Street
and a piot for the awkward twist in the triumphal route to Regent's
Park. Behind lies the totalitarian-looking Broadcasting House,
built as the BBC headquarters in 1931, and now home to the new
interactie "BBC Experience". Opposite Broadcasting House stands the
Langham Hilton, built in heay Italianate style in the 1860s, badly
bombed in the last war, but now back to its former glory.
Tube: Oxford Circus.
Exploring Langham Place
BBC
Experience
Since 1997, the BBC has had its ery own interactie
museum, the BBC Experience. However, a word of warning is
necessary to Taddicts, as the emphasis of the museum is on radio
(Broadcasting House is the home of BBC radio, but not teleision). The
museum is part guided-tour, part hands-on experience, so isits are
carefully orchestrated, with tours setting off every thirty minutes
(every fifteven at peak times). As well as the usual static displays and
audioisuals extolling the irtues of the "Beeb", you get to record a
short radio play with your fellow isitors, and play around in the
museum's interactie section, mixing records, fine-tuning your sports
commentary and presenting the weather.
Mon
11am-4.30pm, Tues-Sun 10am-4.30pm; £7.50; www.bbc.co.uk/experience.
