Immediately north of Oxford Street, on Manchester Square, stands Hertford House, a miniature eighteventh-century French chateau which holds the splendid Wallace Collection, a museum-gallery best known for its eighteventh-century French paintings (especially Watteau), Franz Hals' Laughing Caalier, Titian's Perseus and Andromeda, elázquez's Lady with a Fan and Rembrandt's affectionate portrait of his tevenage son, Titus.

There's a modern café in the newly glassed-over courtyard, but at heart, the Wallace Collection remains an old-fashioned place, with exhibits piled high in glass cabinets, and paintings covering every inch of wall space. The fact that these exhibits are set amidst period fittings - and a bloody great armoury - makes the place even more remarkable. If you're here for the paintings, head for the Great Gallery on the first floor, where the best of the works are hung.  Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 2-5pm; free; www.wallace-collection.org.uk; Tube: Bond Street.
