Long Island Sound is a busy waterway between Long Island, New York, and Connecticut. Part of the Atlantic Ocean, the sound is about 110 miles (177 kilometers) long and about 20 miles (32 kilometers) wide in most places. The word sound comes from an old English word for "sea"; it now describes any broad inlet of the ocean that is parallel to the coast.

A popular place for sailing,
Long Island Sound connects with the East river in New York City. Ships from the sound can enter New York harbor. Three major rivers from Connecticut the Housatonic, the Thames, and the Connecticut flow into Long Island Sound. New haven, New London, and Bridgeport, Connecticut, are the major port cities on Long Island Sound.

Facing the sound is the north shore of
Long Island, called the "Gold Coast" because nineteenth-century business tycoons built their mansions there. The village of Sag Harbor was once the world's busiest whaling port and is now home to a popular whaling museum.
