Madame Tussauds Grand Hall setting is
home to world leaders, royalty and pioneers of the arts, from the
Beatles and Queen Elizabeth II to Beethoven and Henry VIII.
The Chamber of Horrors reputation is legendary and for more than 200
years has provided its visitors a chilling insight into the lives of
history's most notorious criminals.
Madame Tussauds has a ride called 'Spirit of London' where you are
whisked through the sights, sounds and smells of 400 years of London
life.
With over 400 of the world's top celebrities featuring the biggest stars
of stage, screen, history, sport and politics, a place in Madame
Tussaud's is the ultimate accolade of fame!
Special exhibitions include the latest interactive attraction, which
allows visitors to step into Johnny Wilkinson’s boots and score for
England, the temperature raising Kylie Fever, the interactive Britney
attraction and the Pop Idol experience.
More:
Madame Tussaud's and the Planetarium
Daily: June to mid-Sept 9am-5.30pm; mid-Sept to May 10am-5.30pm; £10.50
or £12.95 with Planetarium. Tube: Baker Street.
Madame Tussaud's, just up Marylebone Road from Baker Street tube, has
been pulling in the crowds ever since the good lady arrived
in London from Paris in 1802 bearing the sculpted heads of
guillotined aristocrats (she herself only just managed to
escape the same fate - her uncle, who started the family
business, was less fortunate). |
The entrance fee might be
extortionate, the likenesses occasionally dubious and the
automated dummies inept, but you can still rely on finding
London's biggest queues here - to avoid queuing, book your
ticket in advance over the phone or on the Internet.
You can buy tickets for Tussaud's and the Planetarium (or both) in
advance at the slightly cheaper price of £9.25 or £11.50; call 0870/400
3000 or visit www.madame-tussauds.com.
As well as the usual parade of wax figures, the tour of Tussaud's ends
with a manic five-minute "ride" through the history of London in a
miniaturized taxi cab. The adjoining and equally crowded London
Planetarium (Mon-Fri 11.30am-5pm, Sat, Sun & school holidays 10am-5pm;
£6.50) features a thirty-minute high-tech presentation, projected onto a
giant dome; a standard romp through the basics of astronomy accompanied
by a cosmic astro-babble commentary.
