Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge
and Canaveral National Seashore
The history of Merritt Island extends from prehistoric times to the space age

The history of Merritt Island extends from prehistoric times to the space age. Inhabited by Indian since about 7,000 B.C., the island in recent years has rocketed to renown as the site of the John F. Kennedy Space Center, with which the refuge and seashore share a border.

The seashore spans 13 miles of unspoiled golden sand between Apollo and Playa Linda beaches. You may hike this distance, stopping to swim and beach-comb, gathering such seashells as lightning whelks and angel wings. Other possibilities are shell fishing, crabbing, and surf casting for pompano, bluefish, and
other species. Boating, canoeing, and fishing are also enjoyed at the adjacent Mosquito Lagoon. (Bring insect repellent).

The refuge can be explored by car along two nature drives or by foot via two short hiking trails. Either way the range of wildlife is stunning. Many of the 250 bird species that have been observed here make their nests on the refuge, including great blue and green herons, snowy egrets, turkey vultures, pie-billed grebes, and the rare anhinga and black skimmers. The refuge is also home to 19 endangered species, most notably the southern bald eagle and the brown pelican. Porpoises, manatees, and whales are occasionally glimpsed offshore, and the large tracks of sea turtles and other amphibians are frequently seen on the sands.

The Canaveral information center offers a slide show on the history of this tidal area and the wildlife it supports. Other programs include ranger-led weekend canoe trips for bird-watching, and excursions in June and July to watch the turtles nest and lay their eggs. Open Year-round

On the mainland, downtown has a few good museums but little else of interest to visitors. Little Havana , to the west, is the best spot to head for a Cuban lunch, while immediately south the spacious boulevards of Coral Gables are as impressive now as they were in the 1920s, when the district set new standards in town planning. Independently minded but equally wealthy Coconut Grove is also worth a look, thanks to its walkable center and a couple of Miami's most popular attractions
