Ruby, a precious stone
that displays itself as a red transparent variety of the mineral
corundum, where the color fashions itself in many different
specimens from rose to the famous red to deep purple as referred to
as pigeon blood.
Clear stones of the deeper shades are the most highly prized. When
cut into a non-convex shape, the stone displays the famous six-rayed
star that can be seen in the interior of the stone. The finest
rubies are found in Burma, a region currently known as Myanmar, in
the neighborhood of Mogok. Rubies have been mined there since the
15th century.
Other deposits of rubies are found in
Thailand, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka,
India and Russia. Rubies in the
United States are mined in North Carolina and Montana.
Today, rubies
are not only part of the finest of jewelry, such as your engagement
ruby ring, but are also used in industry as watch and scientific
instrumentation bearings.
