Most of the hotels and resorts in central and southern Andros are
located directly on the beach, typically a rather narrow strip of
soft, white sand. Offshore, the barrier reef is close enough for
snorkelling and features stunning, close-up views of Caribbean spiny
lobster, natural sponges, southern Manta rays, parrotfish and
iridescent displays of coral.
In
central Andros, around MANGROVE CAY , the main settlement of Little
Harbour is most interesting at its northern end, known as Moxey Town.
With a tiny dock for harvesting fishing catches and bringing in ferries,
Moxey Town has a few restaurants and bars, and good access to the
offshore reef as well. The main diving centre on Mangrove Cay is the
Seascape Inn , with special snorkelling and diving packages, kayak dives
and weekly night trips for advanced divers.
A
few miles beyond Mangrove Cay, SOUTH ANDROS features thirty miles of
coastal road edging white sands and coconut palms, and premier
birdwatching and nature-hiking opportunities on its inland terrain. From
Drigg's Hill to the north (where the ferry from Mangrove Cay
disembarks), it's a slow and bumpy 25-mile trip to the road's southern
end at Mars Bay. Congo Town is the site of the airport, offering a few
places to eat, an ocean walk through coconut palms and, in the town
centre, a cemetery where many of the island's founding families are
buried. Everything west of here is mangrove and dense bush.
There are many attractive vistas on the road south and several
worthwhile stops, namely Long Bay , departure point for long hikes into
bromeliad- and orchid-covered hinterlands, High Rock , site of a
magnificent blue hole perfect for diving and swimming, and little
Duncombe's Court , a hole-in-the-wall village with a few restaurants.
Mars Bay , at the road's southern terminus, is a pleasant little burg
with a quaint town square and a busy fishing dock, where loads of
grouper and conch are stacked for cleaning and shipment.
