If you suffer from motion sickness, it's important to take
medication before you get the symptoms.
Decreased stomach absorption is one side effect of motion sickness, so
drugs taken after symptoms appear are not effective, says Dr. Wayne J.
Riley, director of the Travel Medicine Service at Baylor College of
Medicine, Houston.
Riley also suggests avoiding heavy meals two hours before traveling, not
reading in a moving car, train, or boat; sitting in the front seat of a
car; and keeping your eyes focused on the horizon.
According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head
and Neck Surgery, if you feel nauseated and dizzy when traveling by car,
boat, or plane, you can ease your queasiness by riding where your eyes
will see the same motion that your body and inner ears feel.
For
example, ride shotgun in cars and watch the distant scenery; look at the
horizon from a ship's deck; grab a window seat on airplanes and look
outside.
You
should also avoid:
-
Reading while traveling and sitting in a backward-facing seat.
-
Talking to fellow sufferers when you're feeling lousy.
-
Strong smells and spicy or greasy foods just before and during your
journey.
