Nassau - Diving and aquatic sports

The main diving centre is Coral Harbor along the south shore,
where six dive operators maintain shops and boats

It's no surprise that Nassau offers many premier diving, snorkeling, fishing and sailing opportunities. Long, deep reefs and drop-off walls line the south shore of the island, and shallow reefs fringe the western side as well. The main diving centre is Coral Harbor along the south shore, where six dive operators maintain shops and boats, including Bahama Divers (phone 242/393-1466), DiveDiveDive, Ltd. (phone 242/362-1143) and the largest, Stuart's Cove Dive South Ocean (phone 242/362 4171). Every operation also offers snorkeling and swimming trips and combination snorkel-picnic packages, as do most hotels and resorts. All offer similar rates, starting with with one-tank dives for around US$35.

The shallow waters around New Providence are renowned for their sport fishing , especially for grouper, snapper, deepwater amberjack, blackfin tuna, bonito and blue marlin. One reliable operator is the Charter Boat Association (phone 242/363-2325), with a fleet of ten vessels. Other operators charter fishing boats out of Nassau's harbor and include Chubasco Charters, Born Free Charters and Marine Adventure Company.

Sailing is an expensive Nassau pastime, with Brown's Boat Basin, East Bay Yacht Basin, Lyford Cay, Nassau Harbour Club and Nassau Yacht Haven as the major marinas where boats may be chartered. Sailboats are available for rent at most marinas and yacht harbors. Rates vary widely, depending on the size and type of vessel, and whether it's crewed, and you'll need to reserve in advance and provide proof of experience. Marinas to try include Brown's Boat Basin (phone 242/393-3331), East Bay Yacht Basin (phone 242/394-1816), Lyford Cay (phone 242/362-4131), Nassau Harbour Club (phone 242/393-0771), Nassau Yacht Haven (phone 242/393-8173) and Atlantis (phone 242/363-3000).
