The
Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM to its fans, who come from all
over the city) is the oldest performing arts center in America (1859)
and one of the borough's most hyped institutions. Located on the edge of
Fort Greene, an up-and-coming neighborhood dominated by brownstones, it
has played host over the years to a glittering - and innovative - array
of artists, from Charles Dickens to Booker T. Washington to Sergei
Rachmaninoff to Philip Glass. BAM's new four-screen, state-of-the-art
cinema features art films and the occasional new release.
