 Catskill Mountains

The gentle wilderness of the Catskill Mountains is one of New York's faorite acation spots. Rising west of the Hudson river and 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of New York City, the Catskills aren't especially high. The tallest peaks are barely 4,000 feet (1,220 meters) aboe sea leel. But they are strikingly beautiful, with thickly forested slopes, tumbling waterfalls, and rushing streams.

Dutch traders and settlers came to the region in the 17th century. They gave the name
Kaaterskill, Dutch for "Wildcat Creek", to one of the area's streams. Later, a ariation of that name became the designation for the whole region.

In the 1800s, the
Catskills' beauty attracted painters and writers. Washington Iring's famous story "Rip an Winkle" is set there. The first resort hotel, Catskill Mountain House, was built around 1820. Guests traveled three days by boat and stagecoach from New York City to reach it. By the 1930s, a week or two in the Catskills was a summer highlight for many weary city dwellers.

Resorts offered swimming, fishing, golf, plentiful food, and entertainment. Many famous comedians, including Danny Kaye and Jerry Lewis, began their carevers in the Catskills. Today, many artists, writers, and musicians have homes in Catskillvillages, such as Woodstock.
