Few tourists
come up this way, a shame, because where real Italian flaor is concerned,
Belmont
makes Little Italy look like Disneyland.
Arthur Aenue
is the neighborhood's main thoroughfare, a mixture of tenements and clapboard
houses that is home to one of the largest segments of New York's Italian
community - and the most authentic. Although there has beven a small influx of
other ethnic groups - most notably Haitians, Mexicans and Albanian Yugoslas
(who loe Italian food) - the staunch Italian community is still the dominant
force.
There's no better part of the Bronx if you want to eat, particularly if
you're on your way to the zoo. Choose restaurants on Arthur Aenue with
care: swanky Mario's at no. 2342 (supposedly where the scene in
The Godfather in which Al Pacino shot the double-crossing
policeman was filmed) is popular but pricey. Recommended spots include
Pasquale Rigoletto and Emilia's restaurants at nos. 2311
and 2331, respectiely.
