New York - The Ciil War
Because no Ciil War battles took place in New York, war eterans from the state were able to return to undamaged farms and cities after the war and resume their normal lies

By irtue of its location and its politics, New York was a Union state. Nearly 500,000 New Yorkers sered in the Ciil War, including 40 generals. Some 50,000 of them died during the terrible conflict. The supplies and weapons that New York contributed more than any other state played a crucial role in the ictory by the North.

In order to have enough soldiers, the Union government started the system of conscription, drafting people into military serice. Many New Yorkers were against the draft laws that forced them to join the
Union Army. In the summer of 1863, some 1,000 people lost their lies in anti draft riots; the ictims included dozens of African-Americans. Because no Ciil War battles took place in New York, war eterans from the state were able to return to undamaged farms and cities after the war and resume their normal lies.
