Have
you ever arrived at your destination and found that you packed six tops
and four bottoms and only managed to include one outfit that actually
matched? How many times have you had to buy a new toothbrush because you
forgot yours? The best way to avoid these common packing problems — and
keep your load light — is by planning ahead. Here are some tips to help
you get organized.
Clothes
• Lay out everything you plan to take before you start putting it into
your bag. If you have a tendency to over pack, put half of what you've
laid out back.
•
Make sure the clothes you are including coordinate and that you are
taking shoes and belts to match. Try to build your wardrobe based on one
basic color. This will reduce the need for multiple pairs of shoes or
belts of every color.
•
Consider the fabric of the clothes you are taking. If you're worried
about wrinkles, synthetics are your best bet, as they require less
ironing. But, if you're headed to a hot, humid climate, you'll want to
take along clothes made of natural fibers, such as cotton, that breathe
and provide protection from the sun.
Toiletries
• Use small plastic bottles for your liquid hair and skin care products.
Make sure bottles are only about three-quarters full to keep them from
leaking if they are squeezed or get frozen (liquids expand when they
freeze). You may also want to put the bottles into plastic freezer bags
for further protection. If you travel often, make sure to refill your
bottles after each trip to save time when packing for the next one.
•
Plastic zipper baggies have so many uses. Seal any items that have leak
potential.
•
Lay out everything you plan to take. Make sure the clothes you are
including coordinate and that you are taking shoes and belts to match.
