Rio de Janeiro
Cabo Frio - practicalities

There are plenty of hotels and pousadas in and around Cabo Frio, though during summer weekends it can be impossible to find a room.

The tourist office (Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat & Sun 9am-2pm - but in summer also to 6pm; phone 024/647-1684) at Praça Cristóvão Colombo near to the Praia do Forte can help find you a room.

The lowest- priced pousadas are in the town centre on Rua Jorge Lóssio and Rua José Bonifácio; the best ones include Porto Fino on the former at no. 160 (phone 024/643-6230; $35-50), and Cochicho do Xandico at no. 224 (phone 024/643-2525; $35-50), and on the latter, Atlântico at no. 302 (phone 024/643-0996; $20-35).

Most hotels and pousadas, however, are concentrated along the beaches.

Praia do Peró boasts Cabo Frio's most expensive hotel, the very comfortable La Plage (phone 024/643-5690; $70-90). On the same beach is the more attractive Quintais das Dunas (phone 024/643-3894; $50-70), which also has a pool. The Praia do Peró (phone 024/643-2182; $35-50) is more basic. Closer to town, there are plenty of places on Praia do Forte at lower rates, including Porto Fino II (phone 024/643-3291; $35-50). Cheaper, youth hostel- type accommodation is available 1km from the bus station at the Praia das Palmeiras, Rua das Palmeiras 1 (phone 024/643-2866; $8 per person).

Cabo Frio has no shortage of restaurants both in the town centre and on the beaches. In the centre, the Picolino at Rua Marechal Floriano 319 is noted for serving the town's best fish dishes, while at Praia do Forte, La Carreta, Av. Nilo Peçanha 443, is an excellent churrascaria.
