Lagoa
On a Sunday morning stroll or jog in the park surrounding Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, you'll rub shoulders with Rio's seriously rich and status-conscious. On summer evenings the west side of the lagoon comes alive as locals enjoy food stalls, live music and dancing.

Pão de Açucar
Take the cable car ride up "Sugar Loaf Mountain" for the spectacular views, and then navigate the network of wooded trails just below the summit.

Parque Nacional da Tijuca
You can hike, explore grottos and shower under a waterfall in Parque Nacional de Tijuca - a swathe of tropical rainforest on the edge of the city.

Niterói
Both a ferry and hydrofoil run to Niterói, where you can enjoy the view of Guanabara Bay and and visit the Museu de Arte Contemporânea, inaugurated in 1996 and probably the last great building to be created by the veteran Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer.

Confeitaria Colombo
The Confeitaria Colombo tea room was built in 1894, its ornate decor and air of tradition recalling Rio's belle époque - perfect for an uplifting break between sights.

Estudantina
Dance all night to the traditional Brazilian music played by live bands in Estudantina - a popular club evocative of 1920s dancehalls.

Jardim Botânico
Don't miss the Botanical Garden's glorious display of Brazilian plants, from imperial palms to giant Amazon water lilies, all set against a natural jungle backdrop.

Copacabana
Copacabana has it all - rich and poor, old and young, sun-worshippers and athletes, locals and tourists - there's no place better in Brazil for people watching.

Santa Teresa
From congested downtown Rio, hop on the rattling tram to Bohemian Santa Teresa, the leafy bairro of crumbling mansions and cobbled streets favored by Rio's artists and intellectuals for its bars, restaurants and galleries.

Instituto Moreira Salles
One of Rio's newest cultural centers, the Instituto Moreira Salles is housed in a 1950s modernist gem, the former home of one of the city's wealthiest families. The visiting art and photography exhibitions are always worth a look.

Christ the Redeemer  (Portuguese: Cristo Redentor) or Corcovado Christ is a large Art Deco-style statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The statue stands 38 m (125 feet) tall and is located at the peak of the 710-m (2330-foot) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park, overlooking the city.

As well as being a potent symbol of Christianity, the statue has become an icon of the city, its open arms seen by many as a testament to the warmth of the Brazilian people.
