The city
that throws the world's largest party doesn't go into
hibernation after Ash Wednesday. Rio has a vibrant music and
arts scene: classical music and opera, art-house cinema,
laidback jazz and chorinho spots, open-air bars,
over-the-top samba clubs, and throbbing nightclubs.
Bip Bip
club/disco ; live music
Rua Almirante Gonçalves 50 Copacabana
Tel: 021 2267 9696 (info)
A storefront with a few battered tables and a cooler full of
unopened beer bottles is about all the ambience that Bip Bip
has to offer. As the evening progresses however, the
tree-lined neighbourhood becomes the setting as music and
revellers spill out onto the street. An underground
favourite - you never know who's going to show up at the
impromptu jam sessions.
Hours: Mon 10:00pm-1:00am, Tue 9:30pm-12:00am, Sun
8:00pm-11:00pm
Casa da Matriz
club/disco ; cocktail lounge
Rua Henrique de Novaes 107 Botafogo
Tel: 021 2266 1014 (info)
Artwork lines the walls of this avant-garde space in
Botafogo. With numerous little rooms to explore - lounge,
screening room, dance floors - this old two-storey mansion
embodies the most creative side of the Carioca spirit. Check
the website for party listings - click 'festas'.
Hours: Mon, Thu-Sat11:30pm-5:00am

00 (Zero Zero)
club/disco ; glam
Av Padre Leonel Franca 240 Gávea
Tel: 021 2540 8041 (info)
Housed in Gávea's planetarium, 00 is a restaurant by day,
sleek lounge by night. A mix of Cariocas join the fray here,
though they mostly tend to be a fashion literate, Zona Sul
crowd. Playground, 00's Sunday party, has quite a following
among house fans gay and straight. In addition to rotating
parties, the club also hosts CD-release parties.
