The town of ITATIAIA , situated on the BR-116, is surrounded
by beautiful scenery and makes a good base from which to explore the
Parque Nacional do Itatiaia - it has plenty of hotels,
mainly found along Via Dutra, the two-kilometer-long road that links
the town and park.
Take the minibus marked "Hotel Simon" from Praça
São José. The Hotel Simon itself (phone 024/352-1122; $90-125
full board) is extremely comfortable and in a beautiful setting,
with a wonderful orchid garden attached (daily 9-11am).
Nearby is
the much cheaper Pousada do Elefante (phone 024/999-2893;
$10-$35). Back in town, there's a youth hostel at Rua João
Mauricio de Macedo Costa 352 (tel 024/352-1232; $8 per person).

There's cabin accommodation in the park, but it has to be
booked about two weeks in advance at the Administração do Parque
Nacional de Itatiaia (phone 024/352-1461) in Itatiaia town.
You can
get information and maps at the Visitor's Centre (daily
8am-5pm) and at the Museu Regional de Fauna and Flora (Tues-Sun
10am-4pm). Tourist information on Itatiaia and the park is also
available from the Secretaría de Turismo in Itatiaia, at Rua São
José 210 (phone 024/352-1660 ext 305).
