MARICÁ
, 40km from Niterói, is the first stop on the Costa do Sol. A
sprawling fishing centre standing on the north bank of the lagoon,
its peaceful waters are only narrowly separated from the ocean surf
by the Barra de Maricá and Ponta Negra beaches, more
laid-back than Rio's Zona Sul.
From Ponta Negra the view of the
coast is breathtaking. Nearby, in UBATIBA , the colonial farm
of Rio Fundo has been turned into a museum exhibiting relics from
the centuries of slavery.
