Skaters glide across the ice below a huge, brightly decorated Christmas tree. Tourists and New York City residents line up for the holiday show at Radio City Music Hall, featuring the famous high-kicking dancers the Rockettes. visitors peer into the street-level television studio from which the Today Show is broadcast
each morning, hoping to catch a glimpse of the program's stars. Others gaze at the treasures displayed in the elegant shop windows or admire the skyscrapers that line the streets. This is
Rockefeller Center at
Christmas time a holiday picture familiar to many Americans.

But
Rockefeller Center is an exciting place year-round, not just at Christmas. It is a city within a city a complex of offices, shops, and restaurants, above and below ground, where thousands of people work and shop each day. Millionaire-philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr., began developing the center in 1931.

Fourteen buildings were completed by 1940, including the 70-story
RCA building. Several other buildings have been added since. Today, the center, which covers 21 acres, is one of New York's top tourist attractions, drawing more than 60 million visitors each year.
