With a wide range of hotels scattered about the north coast ,
there is a steady stream of punters looking for good places to eat, and
plenty of decent restaurants have popped up as a result, though
there are few options in the low-budget range. Dickenson Bay has
the widest choice.
Bay
House
Trade Winds Hotel , Dickenson Bay phone 268/462-1223. Smart
restaurant overlooking Dickenson Bay, and a romantic place for a drink
at sunset followed by top-class food. Tasty and creative starters, plus
main courses that might include pan-fried kingfish with a pepper salsa
(US$20) or fillet of beef marinated in soy sauce with Chinese cabbage
(US$26). Save room for dessert - the chocolate millefeuille with
raspberry sauce (US$9) is beyond superlatives. Daily 7am-10pm.
The Beach
Dickenson Bay phone 268/480-6940. Newly refurbished and brightly painted
restaurant on the beach serving good food all day. Lunches include
sushi, satay, burgers and salads for US$8-10; dinner specials might be
sesame-crusted tuna, meaty pasta or seafood stew for US$20-30. Daily
8.30am-midnight.
Coconut Grove
Siboney Beach Club , Dickenson Bay phone 268/462-1538. One of the
top food choices on the island for the great cooking, friendly service
and delightful open-air beachside location. Mouthwatering starters
include deep-fried jumbo shrimp in a coconut dip (US$12.50), while main
courses feature dishes like mahimahi in a mango salsa (US$23) and rock
lobster in creole sauce (US$23). The coconut cream pie is magnificent
(US$9.25). Daily for lunch and dinner.
Lashings
Runaway Bay phone 268/462-4438. Busy, beachside place at Lashings Hotel
, with a massive menu, 24-hour bar and pizzas until 4am. Pizzas start at
EC$16, while dishes of blackened swordfish, barbecued chicken or cottage
pie range from EC$25 to EC$45. Daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The 24-hour bar rocks with live local bands on Friday and Saturday
evenings and, during holidays, test matches and Carnival, pretty much
every night. There's a small cover charge. Open nightly.
The
Lobster Pot
Runaway Bay phone 268/462-2855. Good food served all day on a large
beachfront covered verandah at the back of the old Runaway Bay Hotel
, devastated by Hurricane Luis, but still overlooking a lovely beach.
For lunches there's blackened fish, shrimp and chicken linguine
(US$12-15) and sandwiches and salads (US$7-10), while dinners range from
thick soups (US$5-7.50) to various lobster options (US$30 and up). Daily
7.30am-midnight.
