Saratoga Springs
Today, Saratoga Springs is a cultural center, hosting the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra each summer

Famous for the healing powers of its spring waters, Saratoga Springs, New York, has been attracting visitors for hundreds of years. Native Americans came to drink and soak in its waters long before Europeans arrived. The Iroquois gave the site its name: Saratoga, "place of swift water."

European-Americans first came to Saratoga Springs for the waters in 1767. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the town situated in the foothills of the
Adirondack Mountains had become a summer retreat for wealthy northerners. Then, in 1863, John Morrisey brought horse racing to Saratoga, establishing America's oldest racing event, the Travers Cup. The town soon became the most fashionable resort in the U.S. Its lavish Victorian hotels and casinos attracted the rich and would-be rich, most of whom were more interested in horse racing, gambling, and finding wealthy husbands for their daughters than in the mineral springs.

Today, Saratoga Springs is a cultural center, hosting the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra each summer. Authors and painters also gather at Yaddo, an estate that has been converted into a retreat for artists. Each August, the nation's top horses race at Saratoga. And, of course, visitors are still welcome to partake of the famous waters.
