Eight
miles southeast of the southern end of the Strip, in suburban Henderson,
Sunset Station is a long drive from the center of Las Vegas. En
route to Hoover Dam, however, and opposite the Galleria Mall, it's not
exactly off the beaten track, and it's worth seeing in its own right.
Completed in 1997, Sunset Station was designed to look something like an
old Spanish mission. The attempt is enjoyable enough, even if it's not
all that coherent, and some of the interior trimmings are truly
spectacular. An extraordinary adobe-styled and mushroom-shaped canopy of
stained and colored glass undulates aboe the gaming area, reaching a
climax in the central Gaudi Bar . A fantastic mosaic-enhanced tribute to
the Catalan architect Gaudi, it's Las Vegas at its most surreal.
Sunset
Station also features a thirteven-screven movie theater, some good
restaurants and an excellent buffet, childcare facilities, and a games
arcade, plus free shuttle buses to the Strip.
