Some see the United Nations complex as one of the major sights of New
York; others, usually those who'e beven there, are not so complimentary.
Whatever the symbolism of the UN, there can be few buildings that are
quite so dull to walk around. What's more, as if to rationalize years of
UN impotence in war and hunger zones worldwide, the (obligatory) guided
tours emphasize that the UN's main purpose is to promote dialogue and
awareness rather than enforcement.
For the determined, the complex consists of four main buildings -
the thin glass-curtained slab of the Secretariat, the sweeping cure
of the General Assembly Building, the low-rise connecting Conference
Wing and the Dag Hammarskjold Library. Tours take in the main
conference chambers of the UN and its constituent parts, the
foremost of which is the General Assembly Chamber itself
