Outside Frederiksted, there are a few places to take in on a leisurely day trip.

The St George Village Botanical Garden is perhaps the highlight, a few miles inland at 127 Estate St in Kingshill (Mon-Sat 8am-4pm; US$5; ph 340/692-2874), with beautiful botanical gardens flourishing amid the ruined buildings of an old estate.

Just south, across the Queen Mary Highway, the Cruzan Rum Factory offers tours (Mon-Fri 9-11.30am & 1-4.15pm; ph 340/692-2280), and

the Estate Whim Plantation Museum, back towards Frederiksted on Route 76 (Mon-Sat 10am-4pm; ph 340/772-0598), has been restored as it was during Danish times, with a period museum of agricultural tools and other exhibits.

If you like this, try also the Karl and Marie Lawaetz Museum on Route 76, which also devotes itself to mid-eighteenth century life on the farm; don't miss the nearby St Croix Leap on Mahogany Road, a wood-working studio that sells jewelry, furniture and other crafts by local craftspeople.
