Blackbeard, made infamous in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island, is said to have walked the streets of Charlotte Amalie when the island was a legal refuge for pirates, who sold their contraband freely - wild days when anything and everything was legal and the town was affectionately known as Beer Hall.

Born Edward Teach in Bristol, England, Blackbeard was the meanest man the seas have ever seen - a heavy drinker (rum mixed with gunpowder) and a notorious lady-killer (he murdered all fourteen of his wives).
