Vitran buses park at the head of the ferry dock and leave about every half-hour, making stops in the Park, Coral Bay and the East End of the island. Otherwise, tell the driver where you need to go and he or she will be happy to help you out.

Taxis - usually brightly painted pick-up trucks with open-air canopies - are plentiful in Cruz Bay and are also available for island tours (about US$12 per person for a two-hour tour). Don't be surprised if drivers try to pack in other people going your way.

If you need to call a taxi ahead of time, try the Taxi Commission (phone 340/776-8294); St John Taxi Services (phone 340/693-7530); and C&C Taxi Tours (phone 340/693-8164).

Bike and car rental outfits are available; in fact, you'll probably be hounded by agents of the latter as soon as you step off the dock but a quick walk around Cruz Bay will present you with many options, most around US$55 per day.

You can also call Avis (phone 340/776-6374); Best Car Rental (phone 340/693-8177); Conrad Sutton Car Rentals (phone 340/776-6479); Hertz (phone 340/693-7580); Hospitality Car & Jeep Rentals (phone 340/693-9160); and St John Car Rental (phone 340/776-6103).
