Nightlife
in Charlotte Amalie revolves around bars, particularly on
Main Street, with lie music and the occasional DJ. There's also
more cultured entertainment - art shows, community theatre and
eclectic music ensembles; pick up a copy of St Thomas This Week
for what's on when.
The most anticipated (and drunken) event of the year, though, is
Carnival (phone 340/776-3112) - St Thomas's is one of the oldest
and largest celebrations in the Caribbean and really kicks into gear
the last two weeks of April.

The reels take place all around downtown Charlotte Amalie with elaborate costumed street parades, a
dancing till dawn frenzy called J'ouert, music competitions like
the famous Panorama and a final blowout when fireworks light up St
Thomas harbor. For a little primer, read Herman Wouk's noel
Don't Stop the Carnival.
