The Frederiksted, 442 Strand St, is a decent modern option if you want to stay in town, with a pool, bar, restaurant, and TVs and phones in most rooms. (phone 340/772 0500; US$75-100)

The best meal to be had in Frederiksted is served at the Blue Moon, 17 Strand St (phone 340/772-2222), a small bistro that offers a mixture of Asian, Cajun and Caribbean cuisine along with live jazz. A close second is Le St Tropez, 67 King St (phone 340/772-3000), which serves primarily French cuisine.

For late-night drinks, occasional dancing, bar games and live music try The Saloon, 6 Market St (phone 340/772-BEER), and Pier 69, 69 King St (phone 340/772-0069). For a unique experience, you must make a happy-hour trip to the Mount Pellier Domino Club, east of town on Route 76 (phone 340/772-9914). Go for the beer-drinking pigs - yes, you throw them a can of beer, they crush it between their jaws, drink it dry and then spit out the can - and stay for the ambience (dirt floor and thatched roof) or a mean game of dominoes.

There are several beaches around Frederiksted that offer great amenities. Rainbow Beach , half a mile north on Route 63, has good snorkeling and several beach bars and restaurants, such as Changes in L'Attitude (phone 340/772-3090), which offers Tex-Mex and general American fare, plus darts, billiards and water sports rentals. Sandcastle on the Beach, on Route 71 (phone 340/772-1205), is located on a beautiful stretch of white sand and has rooms of various size and price aimed mainly at the gay and lesbian community.

At Sprat Hall Beach, a mile north on Route 63, there is the Sunset Grill (phone 340/772-5855), which serves grilled food and drinks for beachcombers.

There's also Sprat Hall Plantation (phone 340/772-0305; US$100-130), a guesthouse filled with antiques located on twenty acres of virgin land. Next door is Paul and Jill's Equestrian Stables (phone 340/772-2880), where a two-hour ride into the nearby rainforest costs US$50. The largest beach in the entire Virgin Islands is Sandy Point, directly south of Frederiksted, which can be reached by following Melvin Evans Highway (Route 66).
