Located in Poe Park, the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage was built in 1812. This tiny, white-clapboard anachronism in the midst of a working-class Hispanic neighborhood was Edgar Allan Poe's rural home for the last three years of his life, from 1846 to 1849, though it was only moved here recently when threatened with demolition. Poe was rarely happy in the cottage, but he did manage to write the short, touching poem "Annabel Lee" and the better known "The Bells."
